In the Wake of the Lost Hangout

"In the Wake of the Lost Hangout" questions how technological applications contribute to the displacement of people and to the re-writing of ways of inhabiting. It includes sonic, visual and printed footage, drawing from material and ongoing field research in continuation to the work "Hunting Mosquitos" (2022). The Mosquito device, whose high-pitched tone predominantly affects people under 25, has been installed around the city by the Rotterdam municipality and various individuals or corporations. Their aim is to deter young people from gathering, making noise and loitering, acts that seem to disturb the city's safety, order and tranquility. The video captures transformations of public space in Rotterdam over the span of five years and examines the urban sonic technology Mosquito and the spatial politics around it. The work is currently shown in the group exhibition Wild Summer of Arts 2025 at Brutus in Rotterdam curated by Yannik Güldner and Jeanette Bisschops and it was presented at the neighborhood gathering A Station for Resources #03: In the Wake of the Lost Hangout at Grondstoffenstation. The work is supported by CBK Rotterdam and created in collaboration with Geo Barcan.
